For weeks before Halloween, we were prepping Wylie for trick-or-treating and what to expect. We repeated, and repeated, all of the nitty gritty details- about wearing his Stitch costume, about walking up to the doors and saying "trick or treat!", and of course, about thanking neighbors. As a true candy enthusiast, he was counting down the days until the neighbors gave him candy.
Just as we were trying to talk him into putting on his costume, and heading out the door, his neighborhood pals came to get him. He was instantly excited about putting on his costume and heading out... because we forgot to mention that EVERYONE trick-or-treats, and not only was a candy procurement activity- it was also social! As a party animal, this was a welcome surprise to him!
We also failed to let him know that EVERYONE dresses in costume, and he was awed by each and every costumed kid that strolled by. He almost forgot about the candy, mesmerized by the seas of neighborhood kids in disguise.
In general, we believe preparation is key, and we always try to give Wylie all of the information about upcoming events EARLY- so that he has time to soak it in. But I'm amused and thankful we forgot to mention the part about running and giggling with the other kids, and the part about EVERYONE's costumes.... the look on his face was priceless!
And I had to add the picture of Addy, who so sweetly said, "look at my costume, I am a pink NOODLE!"
